December in Tyler, Texas is chock-full of events and activities that are a diverse and eclectic representation of the town’s overall culture. From holiday drag-strip races to a community wide Christmas concert, Tyler, Texas has you covered for the holiday events season.
Turkey Drag 2013
If all you have ever wanted for Christmas is a hot rod, then come on over to Sky Vue Drive-In Theatre for a look at the best trucks, cars and bikes in this year’s Turkey Drag. The family-friendly event happens on Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8.
Turkey Drag is a Tyler institution. The show draws custom trucks of every size, shape and flavor. Clean rides from throughout the Southwest and farther afield will be on display. There will be Top 150 awards, plus best-of awards in many specialty categories. There will be mini trucks, trucks, hot rods, rat rods, low riders, Fords, Chevys, imports and more.
USACI will once again sponsor a car audio competition. Rules are strict. The stated aim is that the sound off be fair and fun. Add to that “challenging”. Competition classes range from pure, raw sound to quality of sound, with everything in between.
Mad Gear Apparel sponsors this year’s Turkey Drag. The company will be on hand with their popular hot rod apparel designs, which include this year’s Turkey Drag t-shirt and matching truck decal. Truckin’ will also be selling their t-shirt truck designs.
Sponsors for Turkey Drag 2013 include Drag For Diabetes, Truckin’, Redline Graphics, the West Texas Shakedown Show and Chillbilly Rods and Fabrication. Texas Finest and Truckin’ magazines will be covering the event. The Internet radio station 81xRocks will do several live shows. Word has it a beard contest is already in progress, results to be determined.
The after-party will be at Click in Tyler, with several hard rock and heavy metal bands providing the entertainment.
Downtown Tyler Art Walk
Downtown Tyler businesses open their doors to artists and onlookers on the first Saturday of December for the semi-annual Art Walk. Take a pleasant stroll around downtown’s central square and enjoy music, refreshments, performances and pop-up art galleries.
The Art Walk takes place on Saturday, December 7, from 4-8 p.m.
Gallery Main Street, which organizes the event, is a juried exhibition space that features the work of local artists. Many of the artists will be on hand at the Art Walk. Currently on exhibition at Gallery Main Street is an exhibition of paintings, prints and sculpture with a theme of “Flight”.
Along with the work displayed at local businesses, there will be demonstrations of art techniques and interactive art projects that involve the audience.
Tyler Community Band Christmas Concert
The Tyler Community Band performs its annual Christmas concert on Tuesday, December 10 at the Tyler Civic Theatre. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m.
The band has long been associated with the University of Texas at Tyler and performs under the direction of Mark Crim. Their all-Christmas program includes “White Christmas”, “Sleigh Ride” and a selection from Prokofiev’s “Troika”. Children as well as adults will be entertained by the musical selections.
Admission to the Christmas concert is one new, unwrapped toy. The event is a drop-off point for the Tyler Fire Department’s Toys for Tots Drive.
